Obituary for
Duke Jones
Duke Jones, a resident of Beltsville, MD for fifty years, passed on Wednesday, August 23 in Crofton, MD. Born on November 18, 1920 in Piqeras, Albania, Duke graduated from high school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. During World War II, he completed the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps Service School and served as a Pharmacist's Mate, Third Class. He was stationed in Northern Africa, Europe, at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Norfolk, VA and at Advanced Amphibious Training Bases (AATB) in Bizerte, Tunisia and Salerno, Italy. Duke also served aboard the USS Calvert, the USS Arundel and was a Corpsman with the 1st Beach Battalion. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in December of 1945. Duke was a restaurateur and "health nut" who enjoyed dancing and loved his children and grandchildren immensely. He is survived by his children, Stephen Gionis of Edgewater, MD, Paul Gionis of Beltsville, MD, Jason Jones of Millersville, MD and Marianne Chenevey of Clifton, VA; his brother, William "Bill" Jones of Silver Spring, MD; his sister, Helen Jeris of Yonkers, NY and his grandchildren, Christian and Eva Gionis, Theseus and Alec Jones and David, Timotheos and Alexia Chenevey. Friends are invited to celebrate Duke's life on Monday, August 28 from 11 am until his funeral service begins at 12 pm at St. Theodore Greek Orthodox Church, 7101 Cipriano Rd., Lanham, MD 20706.
