Ronald George Pedersen
Ronald George Pedersen, "Capt. Ron", 80, of Annapolis, MD, loving husband, father, uncle and grandfather, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017, at Fairfield Health and Rehabilitation Center in Crownsville, MD. He was recovering from complications resulting from an injury when he passed away due to cardiac arrest. Born on August 29, 1936, in Brooklyn, NY to the late Viggo and Lillian Pedersen, Ron was raised in Northport, NY and was a 1958 graduate of the U.S Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. Following graduation, Ron spent three years at sea as a Merchant Marine before taking a job with the Department of the Navy as a marine engineer, where he worked for more than two decades. Ron also served as a Commander in the United States Naval Reserve. After retiring, Ron traveled between the Caribbean and the United States on his boat the "SY Gemini" and then set out to fulfill his lifelong dream of sailing around the world. With the help of many friends and crewmates, he completed his journey circumnavigating the globe on Gemini in 2014, after more than 15 years at sea. Along the way, he met and married his beloved wife Susan, who finished the last half of the journey with him. All told, he traveled 68,000 miles, to 52 countries on 5 of the 7 seas. Ron enjoyed a full and adventurous life. He was an alumnus of the USMMA, a member of the SSCA and WRSC and founding member of the ACG. Ron is survived by his wife, Susan Ulrich Pedersen; daughter, Nina Pedersen; daughter Lisa Pedersen and her husband, Mark Martin; his stepdaughter, Kristin Romero and her husband David; his step-sons, Ben Ulrich and his wife, Lori and Brian Ulrich; his niece, Meryl Burre; his nephews, Phil and Charlie Burre, three grandchildren and 10 step grandchildren. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Ron's life on Saturday, June 17 at 4 PM at the West River Sailing Club, 4800 Riverside Dr., Galesville, MD. There will be a private burial in New York at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation, Inc., P.O.
