Print
Hertha Edna Hanselmann Schmandt, 98, of Severna Park passed away at her home on November 4, 2018. Hertha was born on November 12, 1919 in Boudle, SD to the late George and Renata Hanselmann. She graduated from Greely High School in 1937 and attended Colorado State College at Greely and worked there until she meet the love of her life, Roy Schmandt, while handing out donuts to the soldiers at the train station in Greely. After her husband returned from military his military service in 1945 the couple moved to Washington state where Hertha worked as a secretary on the University of Washington campus. In 1961 she graduated from San Francisco State with a teaching degree. She taught 5th grade for several years then middle school homemaking. Once she retired from teaching Hertha and Roy traveled extensively through California, Oregon, Washington and Colorado visiting family and friends. When she wasn't traveling she enjoyed sewing, golf, gardening, and baking. She also loved to write notes and letters of encouragement. After 28 years in Concord, CA she and Roy moved to Arcata, CA in the northern California redwoods. In 1988 a move to Santa Rosa brought Hertha to a city she loved for years. She kept busy volunteering in her church and as a pink lady in the local hospital. To be closer to their children, Hertha and Roy moved to Northern Virginia in 1995. After Roy's death in 2003 Hertha came to live in Severna Park. Not one to slow down, at age 84 Hertha found new places to volunteer. This time at the Senior Center of Arnold as well as Partners in Care Boutique in Pasadena benefited from her friendly personality and creative spirit. A lifelong Christian, she spent lots of time studying her Bible. Hertha will be remembered as a loving. compassionate woman who put others before herself. She loved Jesus, her family and she will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her two children Susan Wingo and her husband, Ted and Michael Schmandt and his wife, Katherine and five grandchildren. Hertha will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery next her husband, Roy at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122.
