Obituary for Eileen Haughey Searls
Eileen Haughey Searls died peacefully in her sleep on January 6, 2019 in Annapolis, MD. Eileen was born on April 27, 1925 in Madison, Wisconsin. Eileen was the daughter of Edward M. Searls and Anna Mary (Haughey) Searls.
She received multiple degrees from the University of Wisconsin. She received her Bachelor degree in 1948, her Juris Doctor in 1950, and her Master of Science in Library Studies, in 1951. After a brief stint at Yale University Law library, she joined the faculty of St. Louis University as an assistant professor and librarian in 1952. She became a full professor in the law school in 1964, the first woman to do so in the SLU Law School, and the first to receive tenure. Eileen worked tirelessly to expand the depth and breadth of the law library at St. Louis University. She mentored many women students in both law and library sciences throughout her long career, retiring in 2000. She was a distinguished member of the American Law Library Association.
Eileen is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Robert Searls and James P. Searls. She is survived by her siblings Anne (Searls) Brennan of Annapolis, MD; Edward Searls of Charlottesville, VA; Sheila Searls Amacker of Charlottesville, VA. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Ellen Searls of Danville, VT and Alison Bills of Las Cruses, NM. Eileen was a powerful force in the family, a guiding light and a giving soul who will be much missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, January 21 at 10:30 a.m. at St Mary’s Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis.
