Obituary for James "Mike" Stevens

James Michael Stevens Sr., a resident of Shallotte, North Carolina and formerly of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away quietly in his home on October 8, 2018. He was surrounded and attended by loving family.

Mike was born in Washington, D.C. to Winter Baylis Stevens and Helen (nee Van Ryswick) Stevens on June 19, 1938 in Washington, D.C. and later joined the United States Navy where he served as a radioman. He married Beverly Ann Naquin on April 26, 1958 in Washington, D.C. After the Navy, he earned his college degree. He worked for Bendix Corporation and then joined NASA and worked on every manned space flight program, and in 1983 accepted a position as the NASA representative to Australia and moved to Canberra with Beverly, where they stayed for approximately three years. He retired from NASA in 1994.

After retirement he worked as a consultant for several aerospace companies before starting his own consulting company Global Space Communications, Inc.

In 2007, he retired again and he and Beverly moved to Shallotte where he remained until his passing.

He was a Lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Mike and Beverly enjoyed traveling and were able to see a great many places around the world. He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his many family members.

He is preceded in death by his father Winter B., his mother Helen, brother Daniel, and sister-in-law Carol. He is survived by his wife Beverly, brother Tony, sister Judy (Colin) children Michael Jr. (Anita), Susan (Tony) and Thomas (Lisa), seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to celebrate Mike's life on Friday, October 19, 2018 from 4 pm until a service begins at 7 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, MD. Interment is private.
