Obituary for Froilan Viri Tiongson

“The Lord helps those who help themselves. It will work out in the end.” – Olan

Froilan V. Tiongson passed away on Monday, Oct. 1, 2018 after a year long battle with cancer. Olan, as he liked to be called, was born Nov. 17, 1956 in Hagonoy, Philippines. He was the 4th child of 10. His parents are Socorro Viri Tiongson and the late Teodoro C. Tiongson. He attended Manila Science High School and left the Philippines in the 70’s to go with his parents to Guam for 4 years. Olan arrived in the DC area in 1977 and lived in Hyattsville. He attended Prince George’s Community College and helped his parents care for 2 of their grandchildren. Later he worked for GEICO and then Diamond Transportation. He married his wife, Janis, in 1997 and they lived in Ft. Washington until his death. Olan is survived by his wife, his mother, 2 children, Brian and Connie who live in Guam and Danny, his stepson, of Arlington, VA. He was preceded in death by his sister, Fe. His surviving siblings include: Cynthia, Noel, Mona Lisa, Doris, Lenie, Imelda, Ben, and Caroline. Olan had 27 nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his generosity, creativity, kindness, sense of humor, intelligence, and loving way he cared for others. In addition to his love of nature, music was a balm to his soul. Olan was not interested in material possessions. He was happiest in his t-shirt and torn jeans and his signature lengthy locks tied in a ponytail. Punctuality was not his best quality. He always said, “I’ll be there and make my window.” If time is of no essence in heaven, then Olan will never be late again!

A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 10:30 am at the St. Columba Catholic Church, 7804 Livingston Rd., Oxon Hill, MD 20745
